¡Hola!

Today, we uncover a hidden gem in the heart of Barcelona: Gaudí’s oldest work. In the iconic Plaça Reial, located in the Gòtic quarter, you can find the stunning gas lamps that illuminate the space. These lamps, designed in 1879, were Gaudí's first project after graduating.

✨ These beautiful lamps were highly admired by the society of Barcelona at the time. As one of Gaudí's first works, they helped him gain recognition. Crafted from cast iron with a marble base, the lamps feature six iron arms with bronze joints, arranged in two levels of three arms each. The decoration includes the coat of arms of Barcelona—incised in the metal and painted—and they are topped with two entwined snakes and a winged helmet, representing the caduceus of Mercury. Mercury, the herald of the gods in Greek mythology, was also the god of commerce, a highly valued activity in the industrious city of Barcelona.

🌳 Plaça Reial, urbanized in 1850 by architect Francisco Daniel Molina, is a neoclassical square with unique architectural nuances that create the illusion of a rectangular space. It’s a must-visit site, steeped in history and cultural significance, recognized as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL).

🌟 Often overshadowed by his grander works, these lamps offer a glimpse into the beginnings of Gaudí's extraordinary career. Next time you stroll through the Gòtic quarter, be sure to admire these early examples of his genius.
